Tahr Hunting Season

Tahr hunting in the dramatic landscapes and steep mountainous terrain of mid Canterbury is for many hunters the ultimate experience.

The world renowned Himalayan tahr in New Zealand can be hunted year round, with bull tahr found with their coveted winter mane from April through to August.

Introduced over 100 years ago as a game animal, they have thrived in the New Zealand High Country and are prized trophies by kiwis and overseas sportsman and women alike.

The remote areas and difficult country make bagging one of these animals a feat to be proud of.

Heli Rural Methven is one of the area's most knowledgeable operators for hunting tahr, red deer, and other game animals in inland Canterbury.

Co-owner Scott Rogers grew up there and was introduced to the sport of flying in and out of the mountains with his hunting guide father who ran Mountain and Stream Safaris for 30 years.

As a pilot who first learned to fly in the Methven area, Scott knows the rugged terrain and is passionate about sharing it with hunters and sightseers alike.

‘I pride myself on finding suitable spots for hunters to have a good trip away and like to keep it fair chase for everyone.’

Negotiating the steep-sided peaks above the braided river valleys of the Rakaia and Wilberforce aisa challenge for the most experienced hunter so having Scott in your corner is a big advantage.

For those wanting a bit of expertise on the ground, Scott works with some of the most experienced guides in the area.
